about

"All the things in between" began as a small drawing with five distinct points with meanings or ideas associated to them. I found it very easy to compose the music which represented these five arrival points, however the challenge lied in how to compose all the music in
between these points.

Thinking about connecting these five disparate moments in time made me think of the Japanese concept ma.

Ma (間) can be roughly translated as "gap", "space", "pause" or "the space between two structural parts." This spatial concept is experienced progressively through intervals of spatial designation.

Ma is best described as a consciousness of place, not in the sense of an enclosed three-dimensional entity, but rather the simultaneous awareness of form and non-form deriving from an intensification of vision.

Ma is not something that is created by compositional elements; it is the thing that takes place in the imagination of the human who experiences these elements. Therefore ma can be defined as an experiential place understood with emphasis on interval.

There is no equivalent single-word term for Ma in the English language so I chose to call this idea and my piece "All the things in between."
